Communications Handbook
How We Talk About Homelessness in St. John’s
This handbook, created in collaboration with EHSJ‘s Lived Experience Council, offers guidance for productive dialogue about homelessness in a way that avoids causing further harm. Homelessness is often stigmatized and sensationalized by the media, perpetuating harmful myths and stereotypes. As the authors of this guide explain, “the words we use are important.” The guide is a critical resource for media communications as well as everyday conversations that avoid tokenizing or stigmatizing people experiencing homelessness.
The guide offers helpful information for speaking about homelessness and homeless services while addressing common myths and stereotypes.
