Youth Homelessness Educator Resources
At least 35,000 youth in Canada experience homelessness each year. Over 40% of youth first experience homelessness before they are 16. This collections of resource will assist teachers to understand the nature and scope of youth homelessness.
School disengagement and homelessness are associated with poor outcomes and limitations in young people’s lives. A range of risk factors are associated with youth homelessness including mental health issues, family dysfunction, poverty and school disengagement. This means schools are an ideal place to engage students who are showing signs of being at risk of early school leaving and homelessness. Schools can also play a role in destigmatizing homelessness and providing information about available supports and services.
