This report examines the challenges and opportunities in fostering community resilience and social inclusion amidst widespread NIMBY (“Not in My Backyard”) sentiments. Produced by a team of researchers from various Canadian universities and supported by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada along with Employment and Social Development Canada, it delves into the societal attitudes towards homelessness. It critiques NIMBYism, which often obstructs the development of affordable housing and supports, while advocating for YIMBY (“Yes in My Backyard”) approaches that encourage community acceptance and inclusive housing practices. This comprehensive review synthesizes peer-reviewed and grey literature to propose strategies that combat social exclusion and enhance community resilience.
