Homelessness is a complex issue that affects people at all ages and genders as well as families. Homelessness is also a substantial issue for communities and society as a whole.

Exploring this topic can be difficult particularly for those who work in the homelessness sectors and people with lived experience of homelessness. Facing such an immense challenge, it can be easy to feel helpless or overwhelmed.

Therefore, before going further, we want to acknowledge the people around the world, just like you, who are dedicated to finding solutions to prevent and end homelessness.

Home is more than a roof

Homelessness is more than the lack of housing. In order to better understand homelessness, we first have to look at what it means to have a home. Our homes protect us from the rain, cold and extreme heat. They provide security for ourselves and our possessions and a comfortable place to build a life.

What do you think?

What words come to mind when you think home?

  • Comfort?
  • Warmth?
  • Family?
  • Love?

To explore further, compare your ideas with those of a coworker, friend or family member.

By reflecting on what home means to us we can better understand what it would be like without warmth, safety, security, family support and everything else that home provides.
